They are made out of different materials depending on the application. Can use ordinary cast steel if you are pouring brass, aluminum, lead or Babbitt. For steel , on the high end, they be graphite , platinum, or combination of both. In Pakistan though, just ordinary fire clay that is good for a few pours, then make a new one. Obviously, they are very dangerous when they start deteriorating. I dont know if the crucible itself was ever made of plaster, but if you were building a home made furnace, you could definitely line the inside and the lid with plaster.
