The answer is you don't! There is no way to know if there is really an internet bidder. So, having said that, I offer the following:
1) Only bid what you are willing to pay for an item. 2) There are no friends at an auction. 3) You have no control over what you are told that others (like internet bidders) have really bid, so stick with #1!
I do remember at one auction I was bidding on an item I was interested in. Seems I found myself bidding against the back wall. I dropped out when the bid went over my willingness to pay. The auctioneer pointed to me and said SOLD! at a bid I did not make (over my limit). So, he started the bidding over again - this time honestly? And I got the item. I will never again attend one of his auctions. Cheat me once, shame on you. Cheat me twice, shame on ME!
