When you are trying to pump a set amount, do you hold the handle full open and stop exactly on the amount, or do you get close then "sneak up" on it? Very few people can stop exactly on $20, for example, from full flow. Nearly everyone has to stop around $19 or $19.50 and "sneak up" on the amount.
Real simple to verify:
You take the price per gallon on the big sign by the road, multiply it by the number of dollars showing on the pump.
If the number you get matches the number of gallons showing on the pump, you are getting what you paid for within the calibration of the pump.
