If you are high calcium and high magnesium like me, the clay will drain sideways into tile. Here the water will make it about 90 feet sideways, so tile on 80 foot centers works, many are going to 60 foot to speed up a little. The water can flow 90 feet, on 80 foot centers the water only has to flow 40 feet and does so fast enough to keep a good crop. Mostly. These past 5 years have tested that tho!
Here it is the water table that we have to lower, so it’s height doesn’t matter either. It is what you are trying to lower.
As you say, finding an outlet can be the problem. If you only have 3 feet, that doesn’t get you much if the field is pretty flat. Tile should be about that deep, so nothing left to work with. I have a 9+ foot ditch through the middle of my farm, and the ground generally rises as you go away from the ditch, so most of my farm had great potential drainage.
