Yes the D's did have short WB. I would say your answer somewhere lies with the chain drive. The drive sprocket sets in front of the bull sprocket the makes for a lift straight UP at the front wheels.
It is very unlike the final drive of the WC, WD, F-20, F-30 where the drive pinion is walking down the backside of the bull gear. Manufactures didn't stay with this design very long.
