A three pronged setup on the old regulator actually might be a cut out instead of a regulator. Take the old regulator cap off and see if there is one set of points or 2 or 3 sets of points. If just one set of points the regulator is actually a cut out. Another way to tell is if there is 4 settings on the light switch or just 3. If there is 4 the tractor was originally equiped with a cut out. Early H's had the cutout and later ones I believe had the regulator originally. The H was also positive ground from the factory. You can set it up both ways but make sure the generator is polarized the right way. If you switch to neg ground the amp meter should show a discharge when generator is charging. If you want to run it with negative ground you can switch wires around from one post to the other on the amp guage so it shows a charge instead of a discharge. You should also switch wires around on coil but the most important thing is polarizing generator the right way. The confusing part about this whole situation is not knowing what has been done by someone else over the years so just putting it back the way it was, might not necessarily be right. Take the time and investigate the charging system so that you know it is wired up right so it will work correctly. Regulators are exspensive and it doesn't take much to burn them up if not installed correctly. It just sounds to me like you are replacing a cutout with a regulator and maybe not wired up right. Check it out and let us know how you are doing.

Madison's County - by Anthony West. Philip Madison has been a good friend of mine for quite some time. He has patiently suffered my incessant chit chat on the subject of tractors for longer than I care to remember, and on many occasions he has put himself out, dropped what ever it was he was doing, to come and lend a hand cranking handles, or loading a find onto a trailer. Although he himself has never actually owned or restored a tractor, he was always enthusiastic and always around helping with other peoples projects.
