Grounding of the fields on a Delco system usually indicates a bad regulator, this causes the generator to charge at full capacity, it will over heat, boil batteries, or sling the solder out of the generator armature, or both of the above if run for long at a time. Resistors in field circuit will cause a lower rate of charge and usually supplied enough to power the ignition only while running all day plowing, and then when the lights, or a higher rate of charge was needed, the high position on the switch was unresistored and charged at a higher rate, the small cut out that was generally used simply was an automatic disconnect switch from the battery to protect from battery discharge to the generator when not running.
