Just got done figuring my break even on this group of Holstein steers. I used 1100 pound average (hopefully will be higher) and without water or power I am coming up at $1.004/pound. Local Holstein price at the barn is about $0.90/pound. I sell to individuals so I will clear money, but how do the big guys make it with a couple hundred head?
I am feeding a corn ration from the local elevator (been using the same feed guy for 37 years now) and limiting their hay. I go through 1 small square bale every 3 to 4 days. I know you can save money by making your own ration and growing your own corn, but that still ain't free.
What are most of the larger confinement barns feeding? Looking at them from the road it seems a lot of corn silage and not a whole heck of a lot of grain.
Oh, and I do realize that sometimes they loose money. Nothing is always sunshine and rainbows.
