If an older baler, NH & JD seem to be a lot more dependable. If you are buying a fairly new model, that kinda leaves NH & JD as the major manufaturers of small square balers! Making a bale is all about tying knots dependably, and these 2 companies got it right first. Other makes of balers might be good, and are cheaper, but it seems easier to get a lemon with them.

At times I pull a 9 foot MoCo with my Ford 960, but it is a load for it, I think I'm being hard on the pto clutch. Tractor is about 50 hp. I prefer pulling the MoCo with a bigger tractor, just for the weight of hauling it around too. If this is any help to you, don't know what size you were looking at. Mine is a 1209 JD, they go for about your budget 'here'.

Sounds like you are planning on laying the bales in the field & picking up later? Then the WD should handle a mid-sized baler fine, I would think.
