Franz, I think you're right; a pump designed to run off a truck PTO should be low speed/high volume and should work well on the tractor PTO. Trying to run a normal high speed hydraulic pump off the PTO will probably result in sluggish performance. Unless the tractor has "live" PTO, the best option is to run a pump off the engine directly so you have live hydraulics at all times. I am toying with the idea of installing a pump directly in front of the crankshaft pulley. A friend of mine has a WD with the pump shaft coming right thru the old crank hole and it works well although it's a little "vulnerable" right out in front. Lots of the old Fords had the pump mounted likewise when equipped with a loader.
