Official model designation is 831, which makes it an 830 diesel case-o-matic comfort king row crop. Rated at about 66hp and case called it a 5 plow tractor. It has an 8 speed trany with torque converter drive. They were available in many configurations including western, high crop, gas, propane or diesel, dry clutch or com, to name a few. This would be the most popular configuration. The engine is a 301 cu inch indirect injected engine with a 3 3/8" bore and 5" stroke.
Trany is a 4spd with high and low range. The com is a common torque converter just like in heavy equipment or cars and trucks, but with manual lock up so when locked it pulls like a regular dry clutch. But when needed you can flip the lever into com mode and the torque converter will slip to allow the engine to stay in the perfect power band, but the tractor will slow til you either pull through or spin. There is virtually no way to power out the engine with this combo. Works great for plowing, but also for heavy PTO loads like chopping because you choose a gear a bit too fast and stay in com and as the engine pulls down the com slows more, so it basically paces itself based on load. Was a great system, but could put enormous toque to the rear end and axles which is why it never got into the 9/1030 as they would twist axles off or spin the tires on the rims. It would have taken a complete redesign to make it hold up with that high hp. Then the power shifts came along and were better for most things. They still are a favorite of case people and are great for loader work.
