The most important reason U.S. farmers began using row crop tractors is because they allowed the farmer to further decrease their reliance on horses. If you recall, before the Farmall (the first row crop), most tractors were very large and cumbersome, and weren't of much use in the field between planting time and threshing. A row crop tractor allowed the farmer to cultivate and whatnot, without destroying the crop by driving over it. That could only be done with horses before the row crop tractor.
