You've gotten some really good responses. Let me add one more point. There are two types of "lockers", manual and automatic. Both have been used on tractors. A manual locker allows you, via a button, to control whether or not the axles are "locked" together; an example in automotive terms is the ARB "Air Locker". There are others. On the other hand, an automatic locker engages and disengages all by itself, based on a torque bias. The only automotive example is the "Detroit Locker". I have one in my 4WD truck and will never own another truck without one. With 3 wheels constantly driving, the thing is nearly unstoppable.
