Well, knowing it's an 8n, very good chance the axle seals are shot allowing oil on to the linings. For all intents and purposes, oil soaked brakes linings are shot. You can try and clean and cook the oil out, but they will never be as good as clean ones and without the seals being fixed, they are going to get coated again. Thus when you are in fixing the seals, new shoes (and cleaning the drums out) isn't a huge expense. Much better than crashing into something.
