An older tractor that doesn?t have brakes , is there a way to rejuvenate those brakes without putting in new ones.

Hard to help you help your self with out knowing what tractor you have. Some have band brakes some have drum brakes and some have disk brakes and doing things with any of them is a lot different for each other

Well, knowing it's an 8n, very good chance the axle seals are shot allowing oil on to the linings. For all intents and purposes, oil soaked brakes linings are shot. You can try and clean and cook the oil out, but they will never be as good as clean ones and without the seals being fixed, they are going to get coated again. Thus when you are in fixing the seals, new shoes (and cleaning the drums out) isn't a huge expense. Much better than crashing into something.

My cousin that is sadly no longer with us, told me that once on an 8n or 9n tractor that was a 'plug' and not going to be restored, he torched off the bottom of the brake backing plate (an inch or so), and told the owner to throw a handfull of fine dust in there every once in a while to soak up the grease.

The brakes were probably nothing to brag about after that, but at least the dirt would absorb the grease.

My neighbor had a 2-8-9 n back in the early 60's. All three of them had totally worthless brakes. We lived 1.5 miles from the ford dealer. Neighbor had Alzheimer's, his wife told us to take them to the ford dealer and get them fixed. The mechanic who had worked there for years told me they were as good as they get. He said "Henry designed the brakes to be just better than the brakes on a horse drawn high wheeled wagon." I believe him because of all of the darn things I have hauled to the scrap yard the brakes sucked just like the ones back in the 60's. Good luck with them.

My 2N has decent brakes but not as good as the 9N I have. That you could slide the wheel with the brakes. So they can be good. The 2N I don't think it was ever opened up on the brakes.
