Hey everyone.

I'm sorry that my first post here is a request but what can I do, I have no expertise to offer.

Anyway... I'm looking for some advice and you folks seem to know what you're talking about.

Situation is this. We are in Canada in the absolute middle of bum frack nowhere. We're 7 km (4.3 miles) up a windy, uphill, VERY rocky, VERY potholed, unmaintained logging road. It's dry and hard almost all year except for spring.

We have a John Deere 5425 up here, and we are looking at doing some road maintenance with it. Job description puts me in charge of it and I am totally clueless about tractors and how to use them. I was a suburban kid but now I'm living in the country. We also have a degelman 6-way blade and a bucket with a grapple.

The road needs:

- 4 miles of really bad potholes, ruts, and gulleys leveled, and

- crown re-established. Potentially also ditches established but I dunno if we'll go that far.

Apparently we used to hire a grader to do it periodically, but it costs about 2000 bucks to get one out here, which is almost the same cost as a new tractor implement.

So I've been doing a whole lot of research and come to some conclusions but they're suspect because I have no experience.

As far as I can tell we should get either a heavy duty box blade w/scarifiers or a rear blade, or both.

Used market sucks around here far as I can tell. New box blade from john deere is $2400 to $3200 CAD. Havent checked rear blade pricing yet but probably pretty similar.

So.. is it even feasible to do this? what is your recommendation?

looking forward to seeing what you think.

Today's Featured Article - The Day Mom Drove the 8N - by Brian Browning. My Dad was wanting to put in a garden but couldn't operate the 8N and handle the old horse drawn plow he had found and rigged up to use with the tractor. Well, he decided to go get Mom out of the house and have her drive the tractor while he walked behind the plow. You got to understand that while my Mom is a hard worker who will always help whenever she can... she had never operated farm machinery before that day. Dad got her out there, explained how the clutch was the same as in our o ... [Read Article]
