My work on the fuel injection project for the natural gas compressor is on hold for a few days while the mechanical boys work through an issue. I know a turbine compressor will surge if the flow gets too low through it for the speed, but never thought that a turbo would do the same, but it is a compressor. The surge is an instantaneous flow reversal, or a shock wave in the turbine. It will break things in a hurry, and will stop an engine dead in its tracks due to lack of combustion air. The turbo was resized on this engine to put more air through it in hot weather, but apparently works too well now that it is colder. It starts with a rhythmic puff, puff sound in the intake, then a boom when it really went into surge and killed the engine.
It cost a quarter of million dollars to get the turbo rebuilt to the new specifications
They are looking at taking the turbo out and trimming the impeller, or hopefully enlarging the waste gate and bypass.
