Had a 686 with a loader on it for about 6 years. Worked fine, no complaints. Bought tractor only for $10,000. Put a new Westendorf WL-27 loader on it, and used it those 6 years almost daily. Sold tractor only for $9,500 and kept the loader to put on an 886 IH.
Neighbors had a John Deere 2440 with a deere 148 loader on it. I used it several times for various things, and I really liked it. However, they seemed to have regular breakdowns with it. Lots of hydraulic issues and also some engine trouble too. It was in pretty nice shape, stored inside, and they got $8500 for the tractor and loader when they finally had enough with the repairs about 5 years ago.
As far as operating, I prefered the 2440 Deere. For dependability, my 686IH was seemingly much better. I should add, the 686 was a 312 American diesel motor. Also came with 310 German diesel and a gas option could be had too.
