Tractor Compare

IH 686 vs JD 2440. There is a 686 listed at a upcoming Consignment auction(not saying it will actually be there), and I never did like that deere (that needs a lot of work besides). So I want a comparison of the two both are loader tractors and will be primary use. Also what would yous say for a average price of a 686 in average condition(condition not listed on auction flier, nor if gas or diesel) Don't know if I'll go look at or bid on it just want to get an idea what would be the benefit to go for it.

Just for another quick reference (on how it will work) how would the IH 686 compare to its older 706 cousin?

A 686 has nothing in common with a 706. A 686 is nothing more than a 656 with a better engine which will be either the 310 german or the 312 American both excellent engines or a gasser.

Two different animals. A 686 is basicly a 656. They each have totally different transmissions.'6' has a simple 5 speed with meckanical TA. '7' has 4speed-hi/lo with hydralic TA.'6 has 540 pto only.'7' has both 540/100 pto. A '6' is 60-65 horse, and is a lighter tractor. A '7' is 70-75 horse and is a hevier tractor. More in common,in the same 'family' 756,806... than a 656/666/686.Either would do you a good job,the '6' will be easier to shift. BTW, IMHO....The lightweight high speed diesel utility type foreign made(Germany) JohnDeere would not even be considered.

I had a 2030 JD loader tractor. Have had 656 gear drive loader tractors. Like the hydro much better. Gear drive has the shifter on the right. Deere shifter is in the middle so you can raise and lower the loader while shifting. Hydro 656/666/686 forward/reverse lever on the left. Deere has a stouter front axle, lower center of gravity, lower overall to get in lower overhead spots. The Deere does have a problem in the steering, a weak spot. This pivot point pin has a bushing that wears causing sloppy steering needs changed often. I used the 2030 400 hrs a year on loader and spraying, had a #48 loader. Very seldom removed even though it was quick attach. Used the loader in the fall to load and unload harrows used in spraying Avadex. 5 12' harrows behind the 60' wheel boom. Also loaded spreader truck when stilling peppermint. Changed the bushing every 2 years, not hard at all....James

Had a 686 with a loader on it for about 6 years. Worked fine, no complaints. Bought tractor only for $10,000. Put a new Westendorf WL-27 loader on it, and used it those 6 years almost daily. Sold tractor only for $9,500 and kept the loader to put on an 886 IH.

Neighbors had a John Deere 2440 with a deere 148 loader on it. I used it several times for various things, and I really liked it. However, they seemed to have regular breakdowns with it. Lots of hydraulic issues and also some engine trouble too. It was in pretty nice shape, stored inside, and they got $8500 for the tractor and loader when they finally had enough with the repairs about 5 years ago.

As far as operating, I prefered the 2440 Deere. For dependability, my 686IH was seemingly much better. I should add, the 686 was a 312 American diesel motor. Also came with 310 German diesel and a gas option could be had too.

Sounds like you don't like Green things either. We bought that at a neighbors auction after a rod went through the block on the Farmall 504.
The reason I added the part about the 706(another tractor we have) was because that was the next closest tractor I could compare the operation of. Never had a "6" or "56" so I wouldn't know how they were set up.
We only have 540 pto implements so that's not a problem.
Rest makes the 686 seem like much better of a machine then the deere.

Thanks

Hydraulic problems, engine problems, steering.... You basically descried the 2440 that I want to replace.

Thanks for your input

Thanks for the imfo, didn't think about the shifter location when running loader. That would be one thing to keep in mind, or get used to.

706 has a 263 gas so from what you are saying about the engine options in the 686 it should have more go.

thanks

My dad bought a 2440 early 80's. Then had a loader put on. We have used the heck out of it and only ever had to replace the fuel pump and a set of rear tires. Very dependable.

The JD 2440 can be great or be junk. It all depends on how it was maintained. The IH 686 hydraulics are not even in the same league as the JD 2440. The rest of the tractors is fine but the hydraulics are slower. I also dislike the controls on the IH 686. You need four hands to operate everything.

Our 686 had the 310. It was recalled and had 706 sleeves and pistons put in it because of hard starting. Ran cheaper than a 706 with the 282.Engine will wet stack(slobber) if not used hard enough. About same HP but the 7 could pull more.7 is harder to shift for loader work if you have to go through the high low range. 6 is harder to get on even though it was closer to the ground( one step verse 2).Hydraulics were ok but watch the filter for debris(about the same for both tractors).Felt the rear end was to light for the 310 as we had several gears strip off( I still blame this to maybe it was built as a lemon from the factory). I feel that the JD's of that era were better loader tractors because their front end are heavier and their loaders were better, depends on how much loader work you are going to do.

Putting a loader on a 7- or higher tractor would be better off going to a later series or converting the 06 series to the later shifter set-up.

On a 6 the hydro is the way to go if you are going to use it much.
