I put headgaskets in my grandpa's pickup. It had a 350 smallblock that he idled EVERYWHERE. I told him to wind it up every now and then to clean the carbon out of it. That meant going from 30 mph to 40 mph. Anyway, when I pulled the valve covers and intake manifold, it had soap bar sized chunks of carbon and sludge stuck together on top of the heads and in the valley. It had about 250,000 miles on it. He against my wishes wanted me to grind the valves and put new valves seals on it. It smoked a bit before, but after doing that, with the guides loose, I think it sucked more oil than before into the cylinder. It smoked blue like a freight train. What may have actually hurt it worse was my aunt drove it about 3 miles home with the bad head gasket, which was dumping coolant into #8 cylinder.

Since I am looking at older tractors that have probably been through it all, is it better to buy diesel? I do expect to have to do a good bit of work on
