When I lived in Illinois back in the '80's and '90's, the state law was and might still be that its illegal to relocate them because they have a tendency to CARRY rabies. My neighbor showed me a fax that DNR sent him to deal with his skunk problem that he could either shoot them, or drown them. Those were the only two ways to deal with them legally at the time anyway. The village that we lived is wouldn't allow either, they had some guy that trapped them for them. My neighbor borrowed a trap and caught his. I got home just about the time he shot it, and I was down wind when he did. I drove up, heard his lawn mower all revved up, "Rmm, Rmm, Rmm...POW...Rmm, Rmm, Rmm" and then he shut it off, staggered across the street to my house turning green and puking, he shot it along the side of his house and the smell came my way with him.
Over the years, I've killed a few skunks. There is no winning. When they empty and let loose, they let loose.
