Noticed racoon tracks trying to get in my shop door. Set the live cage wire trap. Checked the trap and guess what. There is a skunk in the trap. How do you get rid of the skunk without being sprayed. Could shoot it. But I am sure it will let loose. Trap is big enough that it can lift it's tail. What NOW.

I Got a long pole with a hook, dragged it away from the shop, no problem. Got a tarp slowly covered trap and lifted it on tailgate of truck. Still OK Drove out to a bush about a mile from yard.Wind had blown tarp off. Now what to do.
Got a long stick from bush hooked it in trap pulled it off tailgate. Still no smell. So decided to shoot while skunk was in trap. Wrong idea Shot it in the head . Did it ever let loose . Got out of there real fast. Will come back and try to retrieve trap another day. Should of taken advice to shoot it in backbone , but received that advice to late. Know what to do next time. Thanks for all the advice.

FWB in SK- I've trapped for years and have never been able to shoot a skunk that did not spray when shot. I not saying it can't happen. Just giving you my experience.

Had a friend who used to catch them occasionally. He would cover it with a tarp and run a hose from his car's exhaust to under the tarp. Worked better with a '68 Plymouth than today's cars. Might be a job for an old tractor.

ive caught many skunks, and ive yet to catch one that would not spray, some say if they cant get there tail up that wont, dont believe that, if they want to spray, they will, also every time you shoot one it will spray by reflex, only thing ive found is to set your trap on a piece of plywood, away from the building several yards,i bait it with a mix of cat food and peanut butter, skunks cant seem to resist that, then after you catch the skunk carefully and slowly spread a large tarp over the cage using 2 people, then drop it, the thing will probably take a shot as the tarp covers it , but it will miss you, then pick up the cage, plywood and all and set in on theback of a truck trailer whatever your going to use and take it out in the field or down to the pasture, then shoot it thru the tarp , [ you can hear it moving around] the tarp will stink, so hang it on the fence for awhile

We had an ongoing problem with skunks in the henhouse. Usually found when collecting eggs after dark. We had a regular drill worked out. Any two members of the family could pull it off. One who found the skunk would grab the spotlight, other the .22 rifle. Back in the hen house, one with flash light would open front of nest, shine light in particular nest in question, and whistle. When skunk looked up, other person would shoot it between the eyes. Skunk would expire on the spot. Rarely stink, and if it did, a change of straw in the nest would solve any odor problem.

Local Bee keeper puts poison in his yards to control them. Should have put some in the trap instead of shooting. To late now

Had a friend that did a lot of trapping. He kept a bottle of chloroform, don't know where he got it. He would tie a piece of cotton on a long stick and saturate it with cotton, stick it through the cage in front of the skunk. The skunk would instinctively smell the cotton and was out like a lite. He would then shoot it. He claimed that it worked every time.

When I lived in Illinois back in the '80's and '90's, the state law was and might still be that its illegal to relocate them because they have a tendency to CARRY rabies. My neighbor showed me a fax that DNR sent him to deal with his skunk problem that he could either shoot them, or drown them. Those were the only two ways to deal with them legally at the time anyway. The village that we lived is wouldn't allow either, they had some guy that trapped them for them. My neighbor borrowed a trap and caught his. I got home just about the time he shot it, and I was down wind when he did. I drove up, heard his lawn mower all revved up, "Rmm, Rmm, Rmm...POW...Rmm, Rmm, Rmm" and then he shut it off, staggered across the street to my house turning green and puking, he shot it along the side of his house and the smell came my way with him.

Over the years, I've killed a few skunks. There is no winning. When they empty and let loose, they let loose.

A friend throws a tarp over the trap. Then parks his 8N near the trap and runs a hose from the exhaust to under the tarp. Doesn't take long and the problem is no longer. Says they never spray.
