I went to the home HS football game the other night. It was "America" night, or some such thing. Students were encouraged to show their patriotism. Several students were walking around wearing the American Flag as capes. I doubt any of them know the Flag is not to be worn as apparel nor as part of any costume. I know their intent wasn't to be disrespectful.
The principal of my elementary school growing up was a Sergeant in the Nat'l Guard. Sixth graders took turns raising and lowering the flag each day and he made sure to teach us about how to respect the flag. It has always stuck with me. I do my best to remember to remove my hat during the SSB, to stand at parades as the color guard passes, and I know how to correctly raise, lower, and fold the flag because he took the time to teach us. I've always felt respecting the Flag was one of the best ways to honor those who have served it.
I know the First Amendment and subsequent Supreme Court rulings on the matter allow folks to treat the flag in any manner they choose. I even have a couple t-shirts with a picture of the Flag on them (I'm not sure how that fits in with the Flag Code), but I am considering writing a letter to the school paper just to let kids know there is a Flag Code. Like I said, I don't believe they meant any disrespect, but as citizens we should know how to respectfully treat the flag, shouldn't we?
