I lost well over 50 lambs, ewes and goats in one year to coyotes. One lamb they got right outside the barn door- like 16" outside the door. Maybe you were just lucky or maybe the population wasn't a large as it is here. We have guard dogs now, no losses from predation.
BTW- not every town has anyone assigned to animal damage assessment. In fact, I've never heard of any one in this county doing that. It all goes through the local court on a "he said/she said" manner.
