JD, the annual federal deficit went UP in almost every year of the W presidency. Something to do with cutting taxes and fighting two wars on credit. Fact is, Dubya came into office with a big fat surplus handed to him by Slick, and he promptly gave it all away in tax breaks.
With regards to our current president, the deficit DID peak in the first year of his presidency. But that was as much a legacy of Shrub's administration as the surplus in 2001 was a legacy of Slick Willy. Since 2009, the deficit has gone down every year, with the exception of 2011 (which was basically flat with 2010). Fact. You can check it out at the link below. It seems that when you stop fighting overseas wars and tax cuts expire, the deficit goes down.
