Well Mark, apparently my reply got poofed. It seems it's okay to bust on Bush but not the guy that's in there now. If you mention that name the dreaded "external link" pops up and your post is off to never never land.

I just said in my post that the only reason to run a long term surplus is to pay down the debt Mark. Was that ever done? No, it wasn't. But then the last time we had a surplus we had less than half the debt we do now. And there wasn't any effort then being put into decreasing the debt, was there? The problem we have is that in the rare instances where we have a surplus the first move is to SPEND IT! The only 2 choices our politicians look at are increasing spending (the most popular) or cutting taxes. It's always nice to get a tax cut but even I'm beyond hope of ever seeing a real cut that isn't payed for out of my pocket in a higher tax someplace else. No one intends to really pay the debt down Mark. Not in our life times. The Treasury made a measly $35B payment on the debt sometime back and it was big news! The fact is the debt is rising faster and faster as we print more and more money. The rates we're going mean there's no way to slow things until spending slows. I'm actually wasting my time even noting this because neither major party has any intention of slowing spending. It's just a matter now of how much and how fast we go broke.

You don't think there are more than one set of books Mark? Read up on a guy named David Walker and see what he says. He's the former Comptroller of the US. See what he says about our book keeping and how we juggle things Mark. You cannot have debt that isn't counted, you cannot borrow and call it revenue. You can't get $1.50 out of a dollar bill. But our gov't does it, or at least claims it does it.

I have to ask, if a guy with an "R" behind his name was in office, would you look at things the same way? I don't think so.
