Those darned things seem to show up out of nowhere sometimes, well the deer tick does in these parts.
I've had them on me without having been in the woods and or any tall vegetation, scratching my head as to where in heck I could have picked one up.
Other times when I have been in areas where you are sure to pick them up, a friends farm, with nice stands of pine and enough vegetation, he'll get them, I'll have none.
Whitetail deer are usually loaded with them, took one the other day and there was a bunch on it.
This area has changed a lot, look at aerial photos in the 50's, all fence lines, fields and very little forest or vegetation. When I was a kid you never saw whitetail deer, the first one I ever saw on this land was in 1981. There were hardly any black flies, gnats and any deer flies and or the ones that circle your head, were only in the forest. I never saw one tick on livestock, any of our dogs, very few if any around here in the early 70's into the 80's.
Today, some of the land in the vicinity has been developed, many of the old fields have become forest or overgrown, you can look at satellite images to see. We have an abundance of deer, ticks, black flies, gnats, mosquitoes and not far from the house, the ones that circle your head may find you, though they are less in numbers, and only last from late may to august. The ticks can be dense, walk an untreated dog on the lawn, you could get up to a dozen in a short period of time, neighbors light colored pug would pick them up in no time, but you can easily see them, none since her daughter treated him.
