I had the first option for many years. He used to love hanging out behind the landscape bushes at night, had him set up to be cozy, for a short hair and warm climate dog, this guy amazed me when he'd be out in the winter, was a nice dry padded area under an eave, but.. Like a sentry, nothing got past him at night, he had a small door to get in and out, purely voluntary. It does give you peace of mind at night while sleeping, 'cept for when its deer all the time LOL ! Friend of my fathers had these for years, several on their place, which was large, for horses, you don't want to be a stranger there and be out at night, nocturnal or what I don't know.
I find the 500 mossberg a viable accompaniment for this purpose, with some reasonable alterations even better, the all around grab from the hiding spot common shotgun. I think the intimidation effect on an intruder, of facing a shotgun barrel is a strong one, and compliments ones violence of action if by some long shot one ever actually is put in that situation, a shotgun gets it done in close quarters.
