Decreasing weed and insect competition and damage does increase yield. I understand your point, but at the end of the day less weeds, less insects = more yield.
At least 2 seed companies have products on the market that are gmo to produce more yield in drought conditions. They are very new so how much is real and how much is salesmanship is yet to be known by us average folk, but the effort is there to make a gmo seed that yields better in and of itself.
