None of those numbers designate "weight" for oils. These are explaining the viscosity characteristics. The "w" stands for winter, or the viscosity measurement at 0*F. For multi-viscosity like 0W-40, its viscosity measurement is 0 at 0*F and 40 at 210*F.
Most engine wear occurs on cold starts, why not have a thinner oil in there for the cold starts right? Afterall a 0W-40 should behave that same way at operating temp as a 15W-40 oil does. I think another thing to note is the further apart the numbers are on multi-viscosity oils would mean more additives used. The more additives used could mean the quicker the additives could deplete, and the oil starts breaking down, this is especially possible on non-synthetic oils.
