2. 83 year old woman could get in an accident in those two blocks and then the cop has to perform CPR on her due to her injuries from not wearing the seat belt, or he has to deliver the death message to her husband, or the taxpayers have to pay for her emergency room visit because she has no insurance.

While I agree that if the old gal wasn't wearing a seat belt she had a ticket coming, but there's a lot of supposition in your remarks. What if the cop had to perform CPR, what if she died, what if she had to go to the ER, what if she didn't have insurance?

Ok, What if the old gal didn't get into an accident? What if she did get into an accident but didn't get hurt? What if she did get hurt but the other driver was at fault and he did have insurance? What if she did have insurance?

While it doesn't have anything to do with whether or not the cop was right, the seat belt laws are just more Nanny State bull excrement. Try as they may, the almighty government can't protect everyone from everything. Personal responsibility is where it's at.

I'm not a big seat belt ticket guy, but as I said I lost my father and little sister both in separate accidents 2 years apart that they would have walked away from if they'd been wearing belts. More to the point, fact is w/o a belt you are more likely to get hurt- period. That part is fact. Every time someone gets hurt the insurance co pays for the injury, all our rates creep up. That's why my insurance is running over $4K a year on 5 vehicles and 4 drivers. I'm sure others here have even higher rates with fewer vehicles and less drivers.

Go and watch a few families when you tell them Junior or Sissy or Pop is dead because they didn't bother putting a belt on for that quick trip to the store. Or be like me and live with the memory of your mother retreating into a shell for years and emerging a changed and unrecognizable person when she finally came out years later. Is putting on a belt really such a big thing?

If you want some really good memories, roll up to a few accidents where someones kid ate the windshield because Mom or Dad didn't insist on the seat belt. Fun, fun, fun...

Today's Featured Article - Fasteners: The Nuts and Bolts of Nuts and Bolts - by Curtis Von Fange. The nuts and bolts of nuts and bolts is an interesting and essential piece of knowledge that applies to our older tractors. An improperly torqued capscrew on an engine head or a shear bolt that is too hard on the driving shaft of a bushog can create havoc and make an expensive and uncalled for repair. Let’s examine the purpose and design of these fasteners in order to ensure their proper use. Fasteners are probably one of the aspects of mechanics that is given the least amount of thought. ...
