I must of been lucky, broke my ankle in 1982, small bone on outside of ankle shattered, foot went L shaped to the outside, the big bone was sticking out the bottom. Doctor was afraid of infection so didn't use plates and screws. It hurt day and night for about 20 years, was numb on the outside and swollen for year or two, felt loose like walking in mud with boots on, squishy feeling. Now it feels good unless I sprain it or stand on a ladder very long.
