Ankle fusion Surgery

My 43 year old daughter had to jump off of a runaway horse over a year ago. She thought the horse being very calm she could ride him with a halter instead of walking him a few blocks to his corral. She knew better, she has been around horses since she was about 8 years old. The horse took off and nothing she could do would stop the horse. She jumped off rather than running into the road. The ankle was broke so bad it came through the skin. It never healed. The doctor said there was nothing more than they could do.She had ankle fusion surgery about a month ago. Just wondering if anyone you knew had that surgery, and how did it turn out? Stan

That's a big bummer to be stuck with a fused ankle at that age. Hope it turns out OK. Was there too much damage to replace the ankle? Jim

I had a friend that had both ankles fused when he was in his late 60's.
Surgery went fine. He spent a short time in a wheelchair. After he healed up he walked kinda strange but he limped really bad before the surgery so it was no big deal.

hope it goes well for her, mine was crushed in 1977 , 2 pins and a screw, hurts all the time, wondering if fusion would help/end the pain....

She was told about the ankle replacement. Might be a fairly new procedure? The doctor said if it didn't take, she would lose the complete ankle. Stan

I severely broke my ankle in 76 had 7 pins put in an lived with it for 30 years before having in fused in 06. I have to say I wish I had it done much sooner. It is not perfect by any means but it is much better than it was. Still have some pain and walking all day on concrete still causes pain. I dont have much limp at all and a lot of people would never know I have had it done if I did not tell them. Good luck.

Friend had ankle fusion surgery and (after re-hab) continued passing his FAA Class I medical every six months and his military Class II flying physical and not only continued flying as an airline captain for many years but led a very active recreational life as well. Skied some of the toughest slopes in Col, Cal, Switzerland, etc. Led a pretty active night life as well. WWII (The Big One) and Korean War Marine veteran. Loves life and being around young people. Especially pretty blondes. (;>))

My right ankle is fused along with some steel added. That was 20 years ago and it hurts all the time. But every case is different. My bones were hanging out too but the surgeon told me my shattered heel was the worse part (no fix for that).

I just had the 3rd ankle reconstruction surgery. New screws to tighten the plate. Lots of pain for the last 8 years since I blew it out. Pins, plate and screws. Doc says if this doesn't work it will be ankle removal and fusion with a rocker bottom on shoe. I had a former accident that has left very large scar and skin graft with very thin skin. The screws would chafe from the inside, easy to see the 4 on the inside. I also had polio so have bone loss....still....James

Doc says ankle replacements aren't very robust. Technology for a good servicable one isn't here yet. Don't know if you can fuse for now and eventually replace with something that works good sometime in the future. Muscle atrophy might be a limiting problem.

I must of been lucky, broke my ankle in 1982, small bone on outside of ankle shattered, foot went L shaped to the outside, the big bone was sticking out the bottom. Doctor was afraid of infection so didn't use plates and screws.
It hurt day and night for about 20 years, was numb on the outside and swollen for year or two, felt loose like walking in mud with boots on, squishy feeling.
Now it feels good unless I sprain it or stand on a ladder very long.
