If you have a mag your magnets may be weak or the coil. Touch the magnets with a screwdriver to see if there's strong magnetism. If there's strong magnetism the magnets are probably ok. That means the coil is probably weak and needs replacing. Make sure your grounding switch is working that's grounds the mag to stop the engine. I would disconnect the wire at the mag to eliminate that problem to see if the engine will start. If that's the original mag it's 62 years old and probably needs to be rebuilt. If you ever decide to pull the mag note where your rotor is pointing and make a sketch before removing it. THEN dON'T CRANK THE ENGINE OVER WHILE THE MAG IS OFF.
