'52 SC no spark...

Haven't been on the board for 9 years when you guys helped me get the family SC running. I was in the habit of running it in every Memorial Day parade and a few other times per year but it hasn't been back to work yet as I expected. Two years have gone by without running it and today I have a "no spark"(it's blocking my spare snow plow that I need because my present one broke today...). I saw GlennF's recent post with the same problem and I have already brushed all the contact areas; the center and 4 cap spots, the tang that connects the cap to the mag body and the tang on the rotor. I stretched the spring that carries the coil juice. I filed the points. No spark. I think it must be one corroded connection somewhere. Any suggestions? Thanks all in advance, C.

Battery ignition or a mag?? Need to know that so to be able to help you help your self. If battery ignition pull the cap rotor and dust cover off then turn it on and open and close the points by hand. You should both see and hear an spark when you do so. If not spark at the points then the points need replaced or cleaned better

If it has a magneto, does the impulse work? That is what allows the magneto to produce spark with low engine speeds.

If you have a mag your magnets may be weak or the coil. Touch the magnets with a screwdriver to see if there's strong magnetism. If there's strong magnetism the magnets are probably ok. That means the coil is probably weak and needs replacing. Make sure your grounding switch is working that's grounds the mag to stop the engine. I would disconnect the wire at the mag to eliminate that problem to see if the engine will start. If that's the original mag it's 62 years old and probably needs to be rebuilt. If you ever decide to pull the mag note where your rotor is pointing and make a sketch before removing it. THEN dON'T CRANK THE ENGINE OVER WHILE THE MAG IS OFF. Once your mag has been rebuilt rotate the rotor to the position shown in your sketch and install it. Hal

If you have a mag you should have a grounding post similar to this. Hal

It's a magneto but not exactly sure what make. It has a Case Eagle cast in the body. Gene bender, there's a spring contact that connects the mag high tension to the center post of the mag cap. C.

Forgot to mention that my tractor never had a mag switch. There is a little tab outside of the mag that you can push over to contact ground and stop the mag. There is a post there where the wire probably used to be. I always killed the engine by chopping the throttle completely. Maybe Gramp set it up that way. C.

I just re read your post, about brushing the contact parts, and didn't see you mention the contact points! My FMJ mags have points, surely yours does also!

Why didnt you say your tractor did not have an original device for ignition cause if it is a SC as you say chances are there would be an I-H Dist even an H-4 doesent have a spring

That mag is off a Standard Twin garden tractor. The engine was only rated at 5 hp, but it would pull a 10-inch plow with ease. All gear driven and also had a pto. Hal

Thanks Ralph, I did file and clean the points with emery cloth but I have a new theory. I did not check their gap. If they were rusted together, maybe when I initially turned over the engine, they came out of adjustment or bent. C.

I believe it's a Case mag. It is original. It does not look like the Wico picture and as I said, it has a Case eagle on the casting. The long connection and spring feeds into a hole in the side wall of the cap. The cap then has an internal connection to the middle of the cap. This must be a standard Case mag setup. This tractor is a virgin. C.

I've been advised to never clean ignition parts with emery or sand paper. These abrasives are also insulators. Abrasive particles can imbed in the contact surfaces and you will get nowhere. That's why ignition kits always come with a small fine file.

I parked my Super C one time and it was running fine.I came out the next day and it wouldn't start. I found the spring on the points broke after checking things out.

When you use emery cloth to clean points you then need to use a piece of card board like the flip of the box points come in to clean off the grit emery cloth leaves behind or the points will not conduct electricity so that in turn makes it so you do not have spark
