I wish I could post and say he"s doing great, but unfortunately it"s just the opposite. When my wife and daughter found him in the parking lot last weekend he was really lethargic, and seemed to be really malnourished. Anyway, by Christmas day he was moving around a little bit, but still spent 99% of his time asleep and just plain out of it. Thursday morning he wasn"t doing very good, and was pretty much unresponsive all day. They took him to the vet that afternoon and they gave him fluids, and some medication and sent them home with instructions to at least try to get some formula, etc in him every 4 hours. This morning he seemed to be even worse so my in-laws took him back to the vet for us. This time they checked him over and said his core temp was extremely low, his blood sugar level was really low, and he was having seizures (something we had seen ourselves but weren"t sure about as it hadn"t happened at the vets yet). This time they kept him all day and they said he was once again he was pretty much unresponsive all day. They called early this afternoon and said they had basically done all they could do, and that we could pick him up this evening. So we went to get him around 5. At the time he was still "asleep" and they had him wrapped up in a blanket to keep him warm. The Doc said that he was still not doing well and needed to be checked on every 4 hours at a minimum, and although he didn't come right out and say it, I pretty much understood that his chances were leaning on the bad side of 50/50, at best.

We had just finished talking to the Doc and left the exam room with him and were at the desk paying the bill when I noticed he had thrown up, and looked like he was choking. They took him back once again to help him, and that was the end. The doctor said that he had basically stopped breathing, and as hard as they trued he wouldn"t start again for them.

It tore up both my wife and daughter seeing him go like that, but in the end I think the little guy is in a better place and not suffering anymore. Like the Doc told my daughter, the little guy had absolutely no chance in that parking lot by himself. At least he got to spend his last few days being taken care of and loved by someone that actually cared.....which is a lot more than some of the animals they see have going for them....

So, he got buried this evening in the spot reserved for all the other pets that have died around here in the last 20 years. Like the others his grave is marked with a rather large rock, and in this case a wooden cross with his name on it because it"s what my daughter wanted.

I still can"t understand people that are so cold hearted that they can just throw away a puppy like this, regardless of the situation. I"m afraid to even ask my wife what was spent on the little guy, and really don"t want to know.....but ultimately the only thing that matters far more than the money is that we did the right thing....

..................RIP Pepper.....................

Today's Featured Article - The Day Mom Drove the 8N - by Brian Browning. My Dad was wanting to put in a garden but couldn't operate the 8N and handle the old horse drawn plow he had found and rigged up to use with the tractor. Well, he decided to go get Mom out of the house and have her drive the tractor while he walked behind the plow. You got to understand that while my Mom is a hard worker who will always help whenever she can... she had never operated farm machinery before that day. Dad got her out there, explained how the clutch was the same as in our o ... [Read Article]
