I had a '97 with similar problems. If you trust the dealer go for their unit with warranty. Otherwise go with your favorite trans shop. A good rebuilt one will be about $2500.
I have an '11 also. It's a nice truck. good mpg (17-18 hwy) No issues so far. I do not like the economy mode (MDS) or the 5 speed auto.

I would skip the 09 and a get a 2012 or newer with the 6 or 8-speed auto.

So save your self some dough and fix the '01. The seats are nicer anyway. I drove the wheels off mine. 400,000.
