'01 Dodge Ram Problem/Question

I posted here back in January about problem with my '01 dodge Ram half ton truck. The dash light came on indicating problem with overdrive in tranny. The dealer replaced a solenoid which didn't fix it and one response here was about a TSB which they had on it. We tried that and it didn,t fix it. So I have just kept driving it until yesterday when it suddenly started running the tranny fluid out. It is at the dealer's lot now. I was on my way there when it started leaking. The dealer has a real nice '09 which I looked at and drove but they think it is sold to someone else. They offered me 2000 for mine the way it sits. They had quoted me 3000.00 for a reman'd tranny back in January. I am not really in the mood to spend any more on this truck but I know they could fix it and double their money. Another dealer has a nice one on their lot that I like but my truck is stuck at the first dealer. What would you guys do in this situation? Does anyone here have a'09 or newer Dodge? What kind of luck have you had with it?

Had to stop driveing the 81...seat belt anchor rusted in two, just use it on the farm now...You'r torque converted is going out...you've ben pulling trailers in over-drive have'nt ya...come on fess up. Better buy a bran new Dodge, color of you'r choice, this time change the trany fluid as quoted in the owners manule...and don't pull anything while in overdrive.

J., I'm not sure I understand your response. Are you scolding me for a bad learning experience you had? This truck may have done 200 miles of pulling in it's life and the overdrive was locked out. The hardest work it does on a regular basis is hauling itself and me about 4 miles to my job in town everyday. The fluid in tranny has been changed twice in it's life.

Hey Cat.

I don't know if you can turn a wrench but I replaced a tranny in a similar truck (4wd) with a unit we got from a yard for $600.00.

All told we probably had 700 or so in it not counting our time. The truck was my daughters.

DO NOT LET YOUR DODGE DEALER FIX IT!!!!!!!find a good trany shop that rebuilds there own and have them put good parts in it or a off road shop that dose tranys way better after market parts then any dealer will put in. check the DODGE forums for more info

(quoted from post at 02:28:44 08/12/13) Sorry, I failed to mention, this truck has 85,000 miles on it now.

Why would you not fix it,,, surly you can drive 3K out of it with those miles...

I would go with a factory reman with the warranty no one else can touch (its 36/100K are something like that) and bypass the trans oil cooler with a external rated for heavy towing...

With a dealer installed transmission, they're going to fix the over drive problem and you will have a truck that you know everything about(with a 3/36,000mi warranty), or trade it for a used truck you know nothing about, that may or may not need a transmission in 10,000 miles. Your call, I just hate making payments for steel, land maybe.

Your tranny failed at 85,000 miles and you are loyal enough to buy ANOTHER of the same brand????

I had a '97 with similar problems. If you trust the dealer go for their unit with warranty. Otherwise go with your favorite trans shop. A good rebuilt one will be about $2500.
I have an '11 also. It's a nice truck. good mpg (17-18 hwy) No issues so far. I do not like the economy mode (MDS) or the 5 speed auto.

I would skip the 09 and a get a 2012 or newer with the 6 or 8-speed auto.

So save your self some dough and fix the '01. The seats are nicer anyway. I drove the wheels off mine. 400,000.
