I've never had a starter go backwards. So this is just an idea. Take the end off both your new and old starter. Look at the brushes. I'm thinking there will be 2 brushes, perhaps 4. Look to see if the brushes on the new and old one are grounded the same way. If there are only two brushes, one brush will get power from a stator coil and the other will be grounded. If the ends of the starter that hold the brushes are different, change them out and see if it doesn't reverse direction.
Reversing current through either the stator coils or current through what I call the armature, the rotating shaft, will reverse the direction of any series wound universal motor.
