I have worked with reversing Delco starters. How the factory does it, is the armatures are different. The windings are offset in the opposite direction from commutator bar to armature. Not something you can do yourself and a new "correct M" armature from Willson electric is as little as $20. You might be able to extend the field leads and repin the end plate in a different position, but it would not be easy as that end plate is full of 4 brushes and the starter bolts must run through it. My advice would be find a dealer that sells Wilson (Napa and others) and buy the correct armature to keep it stock and spinning in the right direction.
