I've used a skid steer backhoe attachment. Very hard to reach back to reposition the machine. There are stabilizer legs and you can swing the boom side to side. The arm that goes on the quick attach is good for shallow trenching in easier digging conditions. It uses one cylinder operated by the aux. control and the boom and bucket functions. To swing, you have to steer the machine to the side. For occasional trenching just the arm would be a lot cheaper and not much to go wrong.
