I appreciate all the helpful replies - I am going to try gear lube first, then I will take out the screw and try putting in a grease fitting if it can't hold the gear lube - since the noise is something fairly recent, I am hoping it is just a bad seal and not yet a worn spindle - if that doesn't work I will probably opt for the aftemarket fan, since I would have to tear everything out to get to the seal anyway. (Since there seems to be a lot of people selling aftermarket fans out there,esp. on eBay, I am guessing that this is a fairly common problem with these old M tractors).
