1951 John Deere M - noisey fan

I have been tuning up my Dad's JD M and the noise coming from the fan area seems louder than it should, like perhaps the bearings aren't getting lube. I removed the screw on the fan pulley and tried adding machine oil, but it all leaked out. Has anybody ever tried gear lube or even a grease fitting in this filler hole to counter a leaking seal? I really don't want to replace the whole fan and pulley unit if I don't have to. Looks like it could be a big job to replace. Thanks, Andy

Dont know much about a JD 'M'....But if the fan is grouling the bearings are shot.Probably wont be long till it starts to leak antifreeze.I'd replace it before the fan goes through the radiator....

If the bushings are still tight then I got a cheap fix for you. I did this to my M. I posted this before in the JD forum archives you may find the seal part number.

I got a thin oil seal cleaned the back of the fan hub really good and expoxied it on with JB weld. It self centered and worked out fine to hold the oil in.

If your bushings are shot then they do sell aftermarket fans. Not sure how they fit ?

We had to replace the cooling fan assembly on "Sam" one of our 51MTs because the spindle was worn and was causing a very loud rattle.

The leak may be from a worn spindle.

You might consider using Corn Head Grease or mixing it with 80-90W gear oil to help limit the leak.

Hope this helps.

I see your point. I bet he did think water pump. When I read it I first thought he meant it would leak antifreeze when the fan went through the rad. I'm too used to models without water pumps. LOL

Thanks for the very detailed reply and the helpful photos and diagram! I am going to try heavier oil/ grease and then if that doesn't work I will go with the aftermarket fan. The fans I looked at said they are for serial number 27365 and up, but since my Dad's tractor is a 1951 it will work.

I appreciate all the helpful replies - I am going to try gear lube first, then I will take out the screw and try putting in a grease fitting if it can't hold the gear lube - since the noise is something fairly recent, I am hoping it is just a bad seal and not yet a worn spindle - if that doesn't work I will probably opt for the aftemarket fan, since I would have to tear everything out to get to the seal anyway. (Since there seems to be a lot of people selling aftermarket fans out there, esp. on eBay, I am guessing that this is a fairly common problem with these old M tractors).

The other guys pretty well have you covered pretty well. Just do not let it go too long making that kind of noise. If the bearings lock up you could real easily be buying a new radiator too. That will make the fan bearing assembly look cheap.
