I have a 3 spd top loader tranny that came out of a "78 F-150 short box truck. It is cast iron and looks a lot like your typical top loader 4 speed. I have the shifter as well and the linkage is external similar to a straight top-loader 4-speed. I thought (but you know what thought did) that the trucks all used the cast iron version. My son"s "83 (early) GT Mustang had the aluminum 4 speed O.D. with the integral shifter. He "blew" that one and put a straight top loader 4-speed out of a "71 Torino in it"s place.
