Ford truck question

To get on topic I have three Farmall M tractors. Now for the question. 1981 Ford, 300 inch, F-100.Three speed plus O/D transmission. Ford used two transmissions that are similar, The Aluminum case SROD three speed plus O/D, and the Aluminum case RTS three speed plus O/D. I know that I have the aluminum case so that eliminates the other transmissions. How do I know which one is in my truck? Maybe someone out there used to work for Ford and can answer my question. Thanks in advance. Ellis

look on the drivers side door post...should be a data tag with codes for different components...the code under trans will be the one you need...any ford dealer should be able to tell you exactly what trans your truck came with if you give them code number.

The VIN number should also tell you if you can track down a Ford decoder for that model year. If you still have the door tag/conformation sticker the trans code is their- a Ford Dealer or online sources will identify. Remember this truck is 30 years old it might of been swapped so once you think you know what you have you might still need to crawl under it and verify.

I have a 3 spd top loader tranny that came out of a "78 F-150 short box truck.
It is cast iron and looks a lot like your
typical top loader 4 speed. I have the shifter as well and the linkage is external similar to a straight top-loader 4-speed.
I thought (but you know what thought did) that the trucks all used the cast iron version.
My son"s "83 (early) GT Mustang had the aluminum 4 speed O.D. with the integral shifter.
He "blew" that one and put a straight top loader 4-speed out of a "71 Torino in it"s place.

Seems to me(could be all wrong) that the RTS has an external linkage,SROD dosen't.
