The best thing you can do when you are contacted by law enforcement in a situation like that is to talk as little as possible to the officer. Give name, license, registration, insurance, etc. Any thing you volunteer can be used against you. Small talk can lead to tickets. If he keeps grilling you about details and you don't think he has the authority (be very careful here), you can tell him that you really need to get going, you would like to go now, or "Am I under arrest or am I free to go?" It needs to be done with a calm attitude and respect so the officer doesn't think you are a wise guy.
