I run without the top link quite often... My brush mower has a 'flexible' link in it, but my ground is so rough/bumpy that when the back wheels go over some of the bumps, the whole mower is lifted a foot or so above the 'grass', leaving it mostly un-cut... with top link out, the mower maintains a closer clearance to the ground at all times... I usually don't leave it above mowing level (unless it is hitting something pretty solid)... keep a watch out for getting the pto shaft in a bind....
