3 point john deere brush hog

what problems could I face if I dont use the upper attachment. Ive mowed my fields just fine for years with a relatives 6foot brush hog. There fairly flat, so lifting it isnt necessary. My uncle has said that it can bend the frame if I dont use the upper shaft. Ive never had a problem but I dont want to damage someone elses equipment. Is the upper attachment needed.

My Kubota has a steel roof, but I appreciate the feedback.
im just trying to find out if not having the upper attachment
can bend the mower frame.

I did that on a JD M because it couldn't lift the whole cutter. The bottom front corner hit something solid and top link attachment point came forward and hit the back of the seat. I was lucky there was no injury and little damage. Now JD has come out with a sliding bracket to give it some flexibility but prevent flip ups.

i run a length of chain slipped in a pvc pipe as a top link. make the pipe about a foot shorter than the top link length. keeps the chain out of the pto shaft . it will let the tailwheel flex up on rough ground. some guys say that the mower can flip up and hit the operator, but mine will only go up high enough until it bottoms out the pto shaft.

A 10 ft Bush Hog has no top link, just the bottom pins. uses a cylinder to lift the rear crazy wheels. Before the manufacturers started making their cutters with a top link that has a little give. Everyone seemed to use a chain for a top link, including the state mowing tractors. Why would you depend on your implement to keep you from turning over backward? No it wouldn't hurt it. What will hurt it is running it into the dirt, backing it over 6 in trees, driving over someones spare tire. The list goes on and on. Vic

I agree if not attaching top link when raising 3pt hitch the pto shaft will contact the mower deck and could bend the shaft. I disagree that on most 3pt hitch cutters the center top brackets aren't strong enough to keep rear of mower from flipping up if an obstruction is contacted.

JD builds a MX 8 without a center link attaching bracket. It can also be optioned with a hyd cyl on the rear wheel frame.

I run without the top link quite often... My brush mower has a 'flexible' link in it, but my ground is so rough/bumpy that when the back wheels go over some of the bumps, the whole mower is lifted a foot or so above the 'grass', leaving it mostly un-cut... with top link out, the mower maintains a closer clearance to the ground at all times... I usually don't leave it above mowing level (unless it is hitting something pretty solid)... keep a watch out for getting the pto shaft in a bind....
