Aaron, The general opinion is that if everything else is right and the tractor runs good then it's ok to go with IE. But if there are mechanical issues like poor compression or carb problems it will only be a band aid solution and that the other problems should be corrected before installing IE. If the dizzy shaft is loose then again put new bushings in before IE.
Another thing I've seen mentioned is that the 6 volt version may be hard starting in cold weather, low battery or when the starter isn't up to snuff. I've been told that it requires 4.5 volts to fire 6 volt IE minumum. So your starter, battery cables and genny have to be working right. Most people I've talked to think it's beat to convert to 12 volt and then install IE.
