hello i have a farmall h.and i want to get a electronic ignition for it it sits vertically...is this the delco? or the orginal ih distribitor?.thanks aaron

A lot of folks here will bring up quite a few issues with the electronic ignition units. I have not had any experience with them, you might want to rethink that.

It is Delco, not IH. I believe in the Electronic ignition. Keeping a set of points and a condenser in the tool box might make you feel better, but you will not need them, easier starting, and Good performance. A higher output coil is a reasonable addition to the Electronics in the distributor. Petronix seems to be the unit of choice, but there are several possible choices. Follow the directions and the tractor will thrive! Jim

I am a JD man, not Farmall, however I have put the Pertronix unit in my 520 and also my G. I have not had one ounce of problem with them. I will however recomend getting the "flamethrower coil" to go with the unit. My $.02 worth.

Aaron, The general opinion is that if everything else is right and the tractor runs good then it's ok to go with IE. But if there are mechanical issues like poor compression or carb problems it will only be a band aid solution and that the other problems should be corrected before installing IE. If the dizzy shaft is loose then again put new bushings in before IE.

Another thing I've seen mentioned is that the 6 volt version may be hard starting in cold weather, low battery or when the starter isn't up to snuff. I've been told that it requires 4.5 volts to fire 6 volt IE minumum. So your starter, battery cables and genny have to be working right. Most people I've talked to think it's beat to convert to 12 volt and then install IE.
